Future Food for the Holidays..............

The new loquat field is progressing nicely. The plants on the right are new hybrids from large fruited Chinese varieties. The ones on the left are our own cultivars from cuttings - they are setting fruit now. Looks like a happy spring crop coming.........

Eat more fruit.....................

Damn Thyroid Anyway..............

On of my great joys in life is gardening with Mosaic Mom…..we both really love our fresh vegetables…..Now her thyroid is missing in action and some of our favorite veggies are on her “do not eat list”…..namely broccoli and cauliflower.

Now I have lost interest in growing either one and was considering taking out our latest crop of broccoli….and just when we were getting really good at OVER producing some marvelous crops…It is just no fun not being able to share the joy of such fresh wonders……..So I took some fresh broccoli to work and gave it to my loyal crew.....today they are raving about it and even talking about planting a garden of their own…..god I did not know it was that good…!!!

So I think I will finish this broccoli season….at least my crew will be happy and that is a good thing…..Not as good as sharing with Mosaic Mom though….

Loquats are doing it.............

The loquats have been flowering since September but were setting not fruit. Now that it is cooler the little fruits are coming. Pollinators are everywhere including bubble bees, honey bees, moths, flies, ants and hornets. The flowers are very fragant now whereas they were not when the weather was hot. My astute guess is that the failure to set fruit earlier was related to the high temperatures.
Also the small trees (3 feet tall from cuttings) are setting a lot of fruit - they are located next to a different cultivar and are getting the benefit of cross pollination. All of the other trees are clones from one superior original tree.
Barring a hard freeze it looks like a bumper crop. Mosiac Mom and I love our loquats......

That was last year...................

Had a really good strawberry crop last year (photo below)...............not so sure this time..........kept the plants alive all summer (by rooting runners).......they are still living and looking ok.........a big harvest is in not in the bag though.........should know in about 6 weeks............they have sort of been ignored due to diversion called the 'greenbean'..........must get back into the greenhouse on a regular basis now..........from here on it is horticulture all the way..................i.e. food, food, food.................
